Our mission is to promote a common understanding of the urgent environmental challenges facing the Himalayan watershed. As part of this, we encourage you to share our content under the following guidelines.
Unless otherwise stated, all our written content comes under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY NC ND) licence. For multimedia content, see the section below.
Under this licence, you can republish our written content online or in print without notifying us or gaining our consent, as long as you attribute the content to us, with a link back to the original article on our website, do not use the content for commercial purposes and do not change the content (with some exceptions outlined in the table below).
For all our content, we request that you delay republication by at least two days after the original publication date. In addition, please share data on how many people our articles reach through your site, and inform us if you regularly republish our content at the email address below.
If you would like further clarification on the terms of this republishing policy or permission to use content in ways not outlined here, please contact Charlie Goodson: [email protected]
Multimedia content means: graphics, photos, videos, podcasts and audio recordings.
Any multimedia content with an attribution that carries the copyright symbol is published on our site with permission from the creator but does not fall under the terms of our Creative Commons licence and cannot be republished. If you would like to republish an article containing copyrighted multimedia content, you may use the text and any other material that does not carry the copyright symbol, but the copyrighted elements must be removed.
Attributions will appear as:
Image © Creator’s name
Any photos or graphics (whether static or interactive) that are either unattributed, branded with any of our logos or that contain “The Third Pole” in the attribution belong to us and are published under the same Creative Commons licence as our written content.
Attributions will appear as:
Image: The Third Pole or Image: Creator’s name / The Third Pole
This content can be republished and re-used either along with the article in which it appears or independently of the written content, as long as the licence terms are respected. If republished along with the original article, please retain the original attribution. If re-used independently of the written content, please provide a clear attribution, with clickable links, alongside the item following this format: Creator’s name / The Third Pole, CC BY NC ND
If you would like access to original image files, including higher-quality versions, please contact Lizi Hesling: [email protected]
Images attributed as follows can be republished along with our written content, but carry their own terms:

We purchase “limited use” rights to some images via Alamy. Our agreement with Alamy allows these images to be republished along with the articles in which they appear, but not independently of the written content, as long as the terms of our Creative Commons licence are respected. Retain the image attribution as it appears in the article.

We use images from external providers that have given us permission for their work to be published under our Creative Commons licence on a “limited use” basis. These images can be republished along with the articles in which they appear, but not independently of the written content, as long as the terms of our Creative Commons licence are respected. Retain the image attribution as it appears in the article.
Image: Creator’s name / Source or Organisation, CC BY (or following this format)
We use images from external providers released by them under one of the various Creative Commons licences. As long as the terms of our Creative Commons licence are respected, these images can be republished along with the articles in which they appear. Retain the image attribution as it appears in the article. For independent use, refer back to the source.
Unless otherwise stated, the videos on our site belong to us. We encourage you to share and re-work our video content. As such, all our videos are released under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial (CC BY NC) licence. This means you can republish, re-use and re-work our videos as long as you credit both The Third Pole and the video’s creators and do not use the content for commercial purposes.
For example, if you would like to republish this video, please clearly display the following attribution: This The Third Pole film was made by Aaqib Fayaz and Hibah Bhat. It was released under the Creative Commons BY NC licence.
Re-worked video content should be credited in the same way.
